Portlaoise 3rd’s played their key match for 2011 in the South Leinster Provincial J3 League at Togher on Sunday afternoon.  Portlaoise were playing their old rivals Tullamore and the prize was top of the table in the J3 league. From the start it was a tough encounter with both sets of forwards attempting to gain advantage. Both packs appeared to be evenly matched in the early encounters with neither team able to break the deadlock and score.  The match flowed from side to side with both teams defences standing firm from the opposition pressure and the score board remained at zero for the first 30 minutes. Then Portlaoise broke through the Tullamore defence and Philip McGuire took advantage of the breakthrough to cross the line for a fine try.  Mossie McDonald duly stood up and converted.

The half time the score was Portlaoise 7 – Tullamore 0.

The second half began with a flourish. Tullamore dominated from the start and were rewarded with a try inside the first 5 minutes of the second half. This was unconverted to have the score at Portlaoise 7 – Tullamore 5. Portlaoise restarted and almost immediately Tullamore were on the attack, succeeding in gaining a lineout deep in Portlaoise territory. From the lineout Tullamore set up a rolling maul and successfully crossed the Portlaoise try line. Tullamore converted to bring the score to Portlaoise 7 – Tullamore 12.  Portlaoise restarted and showed great determination and character to take the game to Tullamore. Portlaoise got their due rewards when Conor McGuire gained possession and crossed the Tullamore try line to score at the corner flag. Mossie McDonald converted to bring the score to Portlaoise 14 – Tullamore 12. Portlaoise were not done yet. They continued to keep possession of the ball and force Tullamore to defend heroically. But the Portlaoise pressure proved too much and in a typical landmark move, Stuart Cooper peeled off the back of the scrum , shrugged off  the defender’s tackle and crossed the line for a fine individual try. Mossie McDonald again converted to bring the final score to Portlaoise 21 – Tullamore 12.
