On Sunday Portlaoise 3rd’s played host in Togher to a travelling Enniscorthy 3rd’s for a South Leinster Provincial League J3 fixture. Enniscorthy came to this match with a recent win over Tullamore under their belt and being in second position in the league table they wanted to cut the points deficit with the league leaders Portlaoise. The match started with both teams attempting the feel the strength and weaknesses of the opposition. It was Portlaoise who broke the deadlock after a period of sustained pressure on the Enniscorthy 5 meter line, Portlaoise’s John Dowling powered his way through the Enniscorthy defence and scored a fine try. Mossie McDonald duly converted to have the score ar Portlaoise 7 – Enniscorthy nil. Both packs struggled for supremacy with both defences withstanding the opposition attacks. With 20 minutes gone Portlaoise conceded a kickable penalty for an infringement and Enniscorthy took full advantage to bring the score to Portlaoise 7 – Enniscorthy 3. The game ebbed and flowed and settled into an even sided affair where play was constantly interrupted by infringements with neither side taking advantage of the penalties and converting them into scores. At half time the score was Portlaoise 7 – Enniscorthy 3.
The second half continued as the first half ended with both sides defences withstanding the pressure and clearing their lines to safety again and again. Then midway through the second half, Portlaoise had a player sent to the sin-bin. Enniscorthy took full advantage of the superior numbers and scored a try. The conversion failed and the score stood at Portlaoise 7 – Enniscorthy 8 until the final whistle.
