Portlaoise 1st’s team are playing in  the next round of Provincial Towns Cup away to Skerries. Match starts at 15:00.

Portlaoise 2nd’s team are travelling to Wicklow to play them in their next round of the Cup. This match starts at 13:30pm.

Portlaoise 3rd v  Birr 3rd in  Birr, Co Offaly.

On Sunday Portlaoise 3rd’s travelled to Birr , Co Offaly to contest the second last match in the South Leinster Provincial J3 League. Birr came to this fixture with a recent win over Edenderry under their belt. The weather conditions were ideal with bright skies and little or no wind. The match started with both teams attempting the feel the strength and weaknesses of the opposition. It was Portlaoise who broke the deadlock after a period of sustained pressure with Portlaoise’s P McEvoy powered his way through the Birr defence to score a fine try.  Portlaoise missed the conversion and the score stood at Portlaoise 5 – Birr nil.  Both packs struggled for supremacy with both defences withstanding the opposition attacks. With 30 minutes gone Portlaoise conceded a kickable penalty for an infringement but Birr failed to convert it into points on the scoreboard. Then just on the stroke of half time Birr backs created some space and broke through to score a try under the posts. This was converted bring the  half time the score to Portlaoise 5 – Birr 7.

The second half began with Portlaoise dominating and within two minutes of the start of the second half , Portlaoise’s J Scully culminated a fine team effort to cross the Birr line and score a try. The conversion was missed and the score now stood at Portlaoise 10 – Birr 7. The game flowed with both sides defences withstanding the pressure and clearing their lines to safety again and again. Both sides had opportunities but failed to take advantage until the final whistle and Portlaoise could breathe a sigh of relief. The final score stood at Portlaoise 10 – Birr 7 .A good win for Portlaoise 3rd’s
