Portlaoise thirds played their quarter final match in the Anderson Cup with a very compeditive game of rugby against Nass in Togher on Sunday afternoon. Both teams came to this match with strong records in their recent outings and a healthy respect for each other skill levels. The match started with each side nervously testing the other sides forward power. The first 20 minutes saw tit for tat attack and defence by both sides with neither side gaining enough momentum to score. On the twenty minute mark Portlaoise were awarded a penalty in striking distance for offside by Nass but Portlaoise failed to capitalise and the kick went wide. Five minutes later following a superb pack performance by Portlaoise, the ball was swiftly moved out the line and winger Donal Miller scorched over for a try. Mossie McDonald took the conversation and was very unlucky to hit the post and bounce out. The score stood at Portlaoise 5 Nass 0. A further 10 minutes passed before Portlaoise conceded a penalty which Nass kicked to touch. From the resulting line out, Nass broke through the Portlaoise defence and scored a try directly under the posts. Nass duly converted to bring the score to Portlaoise 5 Nass 7. Five minutes later Nass again breached the Portlaoise defence and crossed the try line to score a unconverted try. The halftime score now stood at Portlaoise 5 Nass 12.
The second half began and almost immediately the Portlaoise pack pressurised the Nass pack into defending their try line for a sustained period. Portlaoise pack drove and drove maintaining possession and were rewarded by a fine try. The score now was Portlaoise 10 Nass 12. For the next 30 minutes Portlaoise dominated the visitors in all areas of the pitch but were unlucky in not being able to convert a single opportunity into a score. With eight minutes to go, Nass broke through Portlaoise’s defence and scored a try under the posts. This was converted which brought the score to Portlaoise 10 Nass 19 and it remained like this to the final whistle. Portlaoise team played extremely well but on the day it was not to be, and so ended their Anderson Cup run.
