Low cost Hackney licence plans for rural areas

THE Government has revealed plans to introduce low-cost hackney licences for rural areas, stating that they will help curb rural isolation and boost the rural pub trade.

The proposal is one of 40 key actions contained in a government report on the future of the taxi sector.

“Many rural dwellers have been particularly impacted by the stricter drink driving laws. Now, through local hackney services, it will be possible for rural dwellers to enjoy a few drinks and get home safely,” said Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin.

The holders of any new rural hackney licences will be subject to the range of new regulations as part of the plan which the government claims will stamp out rogue elements.
