Funding to Support Local Community Involvement in Local Democracy

The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Mr Phil
Hogan, T.D., today (03 May 2012) announced an expenditure package of almost
?600,000 to support the work of local Community and Voluntary Fora in 2012.
The fora were established in each of the 34 County and City Councils in
2000, as part of a Government commitment to promote partnership between the
State and community and voluntary sector at local level.

The fora represent the interests of the Community and Voluntary Sector in
their counties/cities. They facilitate the involvement of community and
voluntary organisations in local authority decision-making. They nominate
members onto various local government structures such as Joint Policing
Committees and Strategic Policy Committees. The fora are also actively
involved in providing training and support for people involved in voluntary
activity.

?The active involvement by local community and voluntary organisations in
local authority decision-making is very important,? said Minister Hogan.
?This funding will support the local Community and Voluntary Fora right
across the country to ensure that local strategies are responsive to the
needs of the communities which is very important in these challenging
economic times.?

The funding announced today will be allocated to the fora over the coming
weeks. In addition to this financial support, the 34 County and City
Councils are also actively involved in supporting the work of their fora
locally.
