Launch of 2013 Supervalue Tidytowns Competition

The SuperValu TidyTowns competition for 2013 was officially launched by Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, together with Mr. Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu, main sponsors of the competition.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Hogan said, “The TidyTowns Competition encourages people to get out there and “Help your Community Shine”. The efforts of local people can bring huge benefits to their communities.  Last year over 850 cities, towns and villages entered the competition and I hope that it will be even bigger and better this year.”

Minister Hogan mentioned the importance of us presenting our country in the best possible light, as a clean and green destination in which to live , do business and visit, especially in this the year of “The Gathering”.  “I am encouraging local authorities to strengthen their links with existing community groups, including TidyTowns committees. TidyTowns has been improving the environment in which we live for over 50 years and has helped to foster Ireland’s image abroad My Department has also been working in partnership with Volunteer Ireland to grow voluntary effort; their website www.volunteer.ie matches members of the public interested in volunteering with voluntary opportunities in their own areas. I would ask TidyTowns groups to take advantage of this initiative.”

Mr. Martin Kelleher, Managing Director of SuperValu said, “2013 marks the 22nd year of our involvement with TidyTowns and the second year of SuperValu’s title sponsorship. TidyTowns is a perfect partnership for SuperValu as we are both embedded in communities across Ireland and TidyTowns committees, similar to our independent retailers, work hard to develop and energise the towns and villages in which they live.

We are delighted to be working closely with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government to ensure its on-going success. We are incredibly proud of our involvement with SuperValu TidyTowns, and I’d like to encourage communities all over Ireland to get involved in their locality, and ‘Help your Community Shine’.  We live in challenging times, economically and socially, but the SuperValu TidyTowns competition demonstrates the real commitment and dedication of people up and down the country to their local community. As a company, we feel that there is no better way to demonstrate our commitment to building vibrant local communities across Ireland, but to be actively involved in SuperValu TidyTowns.”

The Minister expressed his gratitude to SuperValu, the competition’s sponsor for the past 22 years for their continued support. “I’d like to thank SuperValu for their unwavering support which has helped to sustain and grow this competition over the years. It must be one of the longest-running sponsorships of its kind in Ireland.”

As well as the main competition there are also ten Special Competitions that you can enter. Welcoming these competitions Minister Hogan said “these competitions are an intrinsic part of the TidyTowns competition and I would like to encourage entrants to have a good look at these competitions and endeavour to enter some of them as well as the main competition. I also thank the sponsors of these competitions for their support over the years.”
