GIY and Renault Launch Summer Food Growing Initiative

GIY and Renault are calling on all food growers to snap a #GrowItYourSelfie to help raise funds for GIY’s pioneering food education centre, GROW HQ, which will open in 2016.  The not-for-profit organisation has joined forces with Renault for the final phase of its fundraising campaign for GROW HQ, and the most popular GrowItYourSelfie, as voted by the public, will win a 100% electric Renault Fluence Z.E vehicle.

GIY and Renault Launch Summer Food Growing Initiative

Launching the #Growityourselfie GIY Food Growing Initiative is founder of GIY Michael Kelly with GIY’ers Shona Du Bois and Karen O’Donohoe – GIY’ers across the country can join in by capturing a ‘selfie’ with food they have grown and posting it to social media – photograph Mary Browne.

The summer food-growing initiative brings together the food-growing revolution with the selfie phenomenon and GIY is calling on food-growers all over Ireland to take part, celebrating the trials and tribulations of their veg growing with a pic and sharing it using the GrowItYourSelfie hashtag.   The organisation welcomes GrowItYourSelfies of all types – from growers of all ages, from hacker growers to experts, and from all sorts of veg patches – from the pot of herbs on the apartment balcony to the rural idyll in the countryside.  #GrowItYourSelfie participants support GIY to help build GROW HQ by texting ‘GIY’ to 57802 to donate €2 when they post their #GrowItYourSelfie.

A shortlist of the best ‘GrowItYourSelfies’ will be published by GIY and the public will be called upon to vote in order to pick a winner in August. The overall winner will drive away in a Renault EV 100% electric car at GROW Fest- the annual GIY festival (known as Glastonbury for Growers!) in Waterford from 11th to 13th September.

GROW HQ will be the home of GIY, a movement which started with just 100 ‘GIYers’ in Waterford back in 2009 and now supports over 65,000 people each year to reconnect with their food by growing some of it themselves at home, school, work and in the community.   GROW HQ will be a place where people immerse themselves in the GIY lifestyle by growing, cooking and eating home-grown food and it will include a grow school, cookery school, café, farm shop and food gardens.   It will help over 500,000 people to live a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle in the coming five years.

Launching the campaign with GIY today (July 22) Renault Ambassador Lorraine Keane said, “GIY is such a great message to give our children. My girls got great excitement from growing their own tomatoes, strawberries and peas this year. It makes them realise how much nicer fresh fruit and vegetables are and how important it is – and easy it is – to grow your own food. It was also a lovely thing to do together as a family.”

Founder of GIY Michael Kelly said, “I love sharing my GIY triumphs and tragedies on social media and can’t wait to see the GrowItYourSelfies coming in from veg patches all over Ireland.  We’re hugely grateful to Renault for putting such a brilliant incentive in place and this funding is hugely important to us to get the GROW HQ project off the ground.”
