Offaly Cancer Support Centres to attend Irish Cancer Society National Conference for Cancer Survivorship

The Irish Cancer Society will hold a free conference for cancer survivors on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th September at the Aviva Stadium, Lansdowne Road, Dublin which representatives from Dochas Offaly Cancer Support, Tullamore and Midlands Myeloma Support Group, Tullamore will attend. The conference, entitled Living Well with Cancer, is open to cancer survivors, their family and friends.

A range of Irish and international speakers will share their experiences, stories and expert knowledge at the conference which aims to help those affected by cancer to tackle the physical and emotional consequences which can be associated with a cancer diagnosis and the subsequent treatment.

Speakers at the upcoming conference will include:

  • Dr Keith Bellizzi, on life after cancer treatment.
  • Ms Caroline Casey, social entrepreneur and adventurer on valuing ability.
  • Dr Paul D’Alton, on mindfulness and looking after the self.
  • Mr Dermot O’Neill, cancer survivor and broadcaster on the restorative effects of gardening.
  • Dr Jenny Westrup, on living with, through and beyond a cancer diagnosis.

Aside from the main talks, there are also practical sessions with art, music, yoga, exercise and nutrition at the event. This is the Irish Cancer Society’s 22nd National Conference for Cancer Survivorship and it is expected that over 800 cancer survivors will attend the conference to share information and support with others affected by the disease.

Donal Buggy, Head of Services at the Irish Cancer Society said: “We are delighted to welcome representatives from Dochas Offaly Cancer Support, Tullamore and Midlands Myeloma Support Group, Tullamore to the Conference and any survivors in Offaly who might be interested in attending. Dochas Offaly Cancer Support and Midlands Myeloma Support Group, which are both affiliated to the Irish Cancer Society, offer a wide range of services and support to those on a cancer journey and their loved ones.

This conference is an essential part of the Society’s work. It is where we hear from cancer patients and seek to understand and address the needs of the whole person not just the cancer. It is my hope that attendees gain some insight, practical advice and tips to make a difference in their daily lives.”

The conference forms part of Cancer Week Ireland, an initiative of the Society in conjunction with Trinity College Dublin which will be held from 14th to 20th of September. As part of Cancer Week, a number of events will bring together national and international clinical and scientific leaders and cancer survivorship experts to discuss improvements in cancer treatments as well as tackling the effects of a cancer diagnosis on patients.
