Irene Treacy, founder of Smovey Health with Karl Sterling

The event is being organised by Waterford based businesswoman Irene Treacy of Smovey Health. Irene set up Smovey Health in Ireland last year and upon realising that there are only 4.5 Parkinson’s specialist nurses in the entire country she set about becoming a trained Parkinson’s Regeneration specialist herself and through this process met Karl Sterling.

Karl is a Master Trainer at National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and works daily to train people to help those with neurological conditions.

Karl says that “While Parkinson’s Disease (PD) can be debilitating, there is plenty of compelling data to show that exercise is one of the best ways of managing PD symptoms. Studies show that regular exercise can improve gait, grip, balance, stability, strength, and motor control in the PD client.”

Dr. Ryan Foley of Evolve Physiotherapy, Waterford will also give a demonstration into his Applied Functional Neurology techniques that he uses to help PWP.

Speaking of the upcoming event, Irene Treacy founder of Smovey Health says, “We are very excited to invite Karl Sterling for this training workshop in Ireland. Through my own work and training over the last year, I have realized how little information and training like this is available in Ireland in comparison to the US and Europe, so this workshop is going to be extremely educational. It is practical, and provides great strategies to help with everyday challenges, from getting out of bed, improving balance, gait, digestive system and more. Through Smovey we a really want to build a community of physical, fitness and holistic professionals who are armed with the up to the minute techniques to help people with neurological conditions in Ireland.”

Claire Connolly, Parkinson’s advocate was diagnosed at 24 years old. Claire is extremely happy that this training is coming to Ireland. “My PD friends and myself are so delighted that Karl Sterling is coming to Ireland, this training for our therapists and new therapists will give us a much better selection and choice of help and support around the country which is so desperately needed.”

The training workshop is available to physio, physical, holistic, voice, movement or trauma therapists, and fitness instructors that would like to learn more about working with people with Parkinson’s (PWP) and other neurological conditions. The training course costs €99.90 for professionals and €69.90 for carers/partners of PWP. Parkinson’s Ireland is also supporting this training event and will receive 20% of all profits.

The training workshops will be held at The Bonnington Hotel in Dublin. For further details see www.smoveyhealth.com
