Covid 19 Advice for Farmers

As the Covid-19 outbreak challenges every industry, there is increased health, financial and operational pressures impacting farming businesses who already work 24/7. Farming can be a lonely occupation even in better times but right now with social distancing, infection isolation and sadly the possibility of bereavement we want to be sure that you not alone, help is at hand. We’ve collected a list of ideas, advice and help organisations. Please share these with farming family or friends:· Keep connected – Consider setting up a local WhatsApp or Facebook group to stay connected to neighbours and the community. · Farm safe – When under stress judgement and decision making can be clouded, don’t cut corners when it comes to farm safety, take a step back to stop and think especially as schools are closed and there may be extra little people about the farm. Follow Farm Safety Foundation – Yellow Wellies on Facebook for helpful advice or visit the Farm Safety Foundation website. · Get an extra pair of hands – Support at peak times like milking can alleviate pressure or simply having shift cover can give you some down time · Stay in touch – Use technology to check in on each other, arrange FaceTime or Video Calls rather than visiting in person. · Follow official advice– Minimise your risk of infection by washing hands regularly and avoiding gatherings or people. Follow the advice on the Facebook page of the Northern Health and Social Care Trust or on their website. For farmers in the Republic of Ireland, the Facebook page of HSE Ireland and their website have advice on how to access support. You can also check out this helpful guide from Ulster Farmers’ Union on essential farm visits. · Mind your mental health – If you are concerned about your mental wellbeing talk to someone, do not face issues alone.
