Labour conference to be picketed over home tax
The Campaign Against Household & Water Taxes (CAHWT) will be protesting at
the Labour Party Conference in NUI Galway this Saturday. The CAHWT will be
calling for a scrapping of the home tax, given its manifest unpopularity
with 50% of households refusing to register. The protest assembles in Eyre
Square at 1pm.
“Labour opposed local household taxes and water charges before the
election. The Party spent millions of euros on press advertisements telling
us that Fine Gael would bring in such charges,” said Gregor Kerr of the
CAHWT.
“Now Labour has done a total U-turn and is intimidating pensioners, the
unemployed and ordinary home-owners to pay this inequitable tax. This is a
million miles removed from James Connolly who founded Labour 100 years ago”.
“We are calling on Labour to recognise the mass opposition to the home tax
clearly shown by the 50% registration and to scrap the tax. There are also
thousands more who paid out of fear– a scandalous situation for a Party
purporting to stand for working people,” said Mr Kerr.
