Damer House Gallery re-opens with Mark Joyce ‘Bending Light’

Damer House Gallery, Roscrea has re-opened after a three-year closure while conservation work was carried out on Damer House by the OPW. The gallery was delighted to welcome Mark Joyce with his work ’Bending Light’ as the first exhibition of this year. Joyce’s work explores the phenomenological strangeness of physical light. The official opening took place on Saturday June 10 and was opened by Catherine Marshall, Curator, Art Historian and Writer, who said that Joyce’s understanding of light reminded her of Vermeer. She noted that his work was very suited the intimate gallery space and, the high ceilings and large windows, which flood the gallery with natural light is a perfect showcase for his work. Mark has had solo exhibitions in Ireland, UK, and the USA where he was Artist in Residence at the Albers Foundation. His work is in the collections of the Arts Council and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He received the Thomas Demandware (2009) and represented Ireland at the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, France. Mark will run a workshop on the fascinating world of historical colours on Saturday 24 June upstairs in the gallery from 11:30 am – 1pm. In this workshop, you will learn about the history of colours and how they have been used in art, design, and fashion throughout the ages. Mark will guide you through exercises and activities to help you develop your own colour palette and explore different techniques for using colour in your work. This hand-on workshop is suited to all levels from beginners to advanced and no previous experience required, just curiosity, and all ages are welcome. All materials are provided.
